The Georgia
Association of Kidney Patients (GAKP) was founded to serve the best
interests of kidney patients and their families. In 1986 a core
group of our members were involved in passing dialyzer reuse
legislation in Georgia (OCGA 31-16-7). In 2000 we were instrumental
in passing a dialysis facility licensing statute in Georgia (OCGA
31-44-1). Our efforts led to substantial improvements in the quality
and safety of the care that Georgia dialysis patients receive. Our
experiences in passing this legislation taught us that an
organization was needed in Georgia that would always exclusively
represent the best interests of patients. Further realizing that no
kidney patient organization currently existed in the state of
Georgia, we organized GAKP to fill that need.
We are an advocacy
and support group for our members and all kidney patients in the
state of Georgia. We have no other constituency to serve except
kidney patients and their families. We are pledged to always put the
patient first in all matters.
